Congratulations on being accepted to study abroad! This opportunity can lead to immense personal and professional growth. As you prepare for your journey, use this checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything important.
Pack Appropriately for the Weather
Research the average weather and climate at your destination so you can pack properly. If heading somewhere cold, bring warm layers like sweaters, jackets, gloves, and scarves. Going somewhere hot and humid? Pack breathable, lightweight clothing along with sun protection. The proper attire makes all the difference in your comfort.
Don’t Forget Your Passport and Check Its Validity
Your passport allows international travel, so don’t forget it! Also, make sure it doesn’t expire for at least 6 months after your program ends in case you want to travel afterwards. Check visa requirements too – you’ll likely need to provide your valid passport when applying for a student visa.
Apply for Your Necessary Visas
Find out from your university and government agencies what visas or permits you need as an international student. This usually involves submitting documents like your valid passport, university acceptance letter, financial statements showing you can support yourself, and more. Give yourself plenty of time for processing.
Have Sufficient Funds Accessible
As an international student, you’ll need sufficient funds to cover tuition, housing, food, supplies, travel expenses and more. Research costs and make sure you have access to enough money, likely from a combination of savings, family support, scholarships and part-time work. Notify banks of international travel so your accounts remain usable. And exchange some domestic currency for that of your destination country before arriving.
Obtain Your ISIC
An International Student Identity Card provides discounts on food, travel, museum fees, and other staples for students abroad. Check if your university provides this, or look into getting one independently. It can save you substantial amounts!
Get Health and Travel Insurance
Many countries require visiting students to have health and travel insurance that covers illnesses, injuries, theft, or other issues that may arise. So investigate insurance options – your university may provide recommendations or plans tailored for study abroad students. A full medical checkup before departing is also wise.
With preparations like these checked off, you can embark on your global studies confidently and focus on personal enrichment! Let me know if you need any clarification or have additional questions.
